If you’re at the store or the fridge trying to figure out what to slice up for your conure, it can seem like there are a million options. The good news is that your conure can eat many vegetables, including cucumbers.
But some vegetables are better for your conure than others, so which ones should you choose? We highlight everything that you need to know here.
Can Conures Eat Cucumbers?
Yes! Not only is feeding cucumbers to your conure an affordable option, but cucumbers also have a litany of health benefits. In short, they are a safe addition to your pet’s diet.
We recommend feeding chopped-up cucumbers as a part of their salad (alongside other vegetables). However, some parrots may prefer cucumbers in pieces big enough for them to hold in a claw and munch on at their leisure. For such individuals, chopped cucumbers might not be the best.
The 3 Benefits of Cucumbers for Conures

Cucumbers are natural and healthy foods for you to add to your conure’s diet. They don’t have a high amount of sugar, but equally important is what it does offer your parrot.
We highlighted the three most beneficial facts about cucumbers here:
1. Water
Just like you need water in your diet to stay healthy, your bird also needs copious amounts of water. While nothing replaces actual drinking water in terms of hydration, cucumbers contain a high amount of water, which can help your parrot remain better hydrated.
2. Low Calorie
Compared to fruits, vegetables (including cucumber) are often quite low in terms of their caloric impact. This is viewed as a benefit for pet parrots, as they rarely get enough exercise to justify a high-calorie diet.
3. Enrichment
If your conure enjoys cucumber, it’s sure to offer them with a great deal of enrichment as well. The sight of one of their favorite foods making its way to their cage would definitely elicit positive responses from your pet, which would contribute towards their overall happiness.
Other Great Vegetables for Your Conure

Cucumbers are great for your conure, but they’re not the only vegetables that your bird should be eating. Here, we listed a few other veggies that you can feed your bird. They should be offered fresh, washed, and raw (unless specified otherwise).
- Kale
- Spinach
- Collard greens
- Bell peppers (all colors, including the seeds)
- Carrots
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Pumpkin (steamed or boiled)
- Sweet potatoes (steamed, in moderation)

Stick to the Pellets
Trying to meet all the individual requirements of your conure’s diet is a complicated endeavor if you’re tracking down all the foods individually. That’s why it’s often best to stick to a pellet-based diet as a base for their nutrition.
Choose a high-quality pellet food, and it should make up around 60 to 70% of your parrot’s diet. From there, you can supplement with vegetables, seeds, nuts, and perhaps a small fraction of fruit as treats. It’s best to follow your veterinarian’s guide with regards to your pet’s nutrition, as most dietary recommendations may not factor in for your pet’s individual needs.

Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Conure
While there are plenty of foods that are great for conures, there are a few that you need to keep away from your bird. We highlighted some of them here:
- Figs (the sap is toxic)
- Avocado
- Candy
- Chocolate
- Coffee
- Sports drinks
- Potato (eyes and shoots)
- Sage
- Processed foods meant for human consumption
- Any wild flower (many wildflowers are toxic for conures)
Final Thoughts
In the end, it’s giving your conure a varied diet that matters. Conures love fruits and veggies, cucumbers included. While a pellet-based diet will provide them with most of the nutrients that they need, fruits and veggies are recommended for keeping your parrot happy and healthy while giving them an extra boost of nutrients.
Variety is vital, though, because while many of these veggies are good for them, they need the nutrients from all of them to stay happy and healthy!
