Our Experience

Litter Genie Platinum Pail Review - cat using product

The importance of litter box odor control wasn’t on my radar until I moved into our new house and had no choice but to place the litter box in a higher-traffic area

As soon as the Litter Genie Platinum Pail arrived, I turned off the autoclean function on my self-cleaning box and returned to manual scooping—all to answer the question: Can the Litter Genie keep my laundry room smelling as fresh as my premium, odor-locking, auto-cleaning litter box?

What I Liked

My first impression of this pail was that it is one of the nicest-looking trash cans I’ve ever seen. It is sleek and blends nicely into the background. The stainless steel shell gives it a pleasant feel and a decent weight, which speaks to its durability.

The design is fairly simple. The rounded edges of the lid and neutral color scheme give it a clean look. Meanwhile, the odor control door, which utilizes a plastic tab to lock it in place, seems too simplistic, but actually gets the job done. The scoop holder is a nice touch, as well.

But what I liked most about this product was the odor control. The sliding door effectively locks odors in by sealing the top of the bag in between uses. And the double door system ensures that the smells gathering inside the bag never make their way out.

I used the Genie for a full eight days—until the first bag was full—and never once noticed any smells coming from it. I scooped daily and aside from the hours between scooping, my laundry room remained pleasantly un-stinky.

Where I Saw Room for Improvement

I have very few complaints about this litter pail, outside of a few nitpicky things.

One, it would be nice to have a foot-activated lever to open the lid. But this isn’t something you’ll find on any of the Litter Genie pail models, which probably has something to do with the odor control mechanisms.

The only other complaint I have is that the holding area above the inner door is fairly small. A days’ worth of waste from my cat is almost too much to fit, which means sometimes I have to “double flush,” i.e. shut the lid, pull the trap door, resecure it, and continue scooping.

This isn’t a big deal, especially if you scoop after every litter box use, but for me, it did add a little time to the daily cleaning process.

Overall, though, I am very impressed with this product.

Key Features

Multiple Odor-Locking Features

The Litter Genie Platinum Pail features multiple design points to lock in odors and reduce litter box smells.

Litter Genie pail liners are made with multi-layer odor-control technology to lock odors in. These thick bags won’t break, tear, or let any smells escape.

Lastly, the sliding lever door ensures that older waste already deposited in the bag never sees the light of day. This inner door is angled, allowing enough room for you to scoop new soiled litter into the bin. Once you’re done scooping, close the top door and release the slider door to drop the new waste into the bag.

In between cleanings, this double-door system helps ensure no odors escape through the top of the pail.

By effectively holding scooped waste throughout the week without letting odors escape, this pail helps reduce your trips to the dumpster.

With the Litter Genie Platinum Pail, you can still scoop every day (or even multiple times per day), but skip the single-use waste bags and multiple trips to the outdoor trash can.

Because the pail holds up to 8 days’ worth of waste from a single cat, you can drastically reduce how often you have to haul dirty litter around. Pro Tip: Take the bag out on trash day each week and never have to deal with lingering litter smells again!

The intelligent design and compatible liner rolls make refilling the pail super easy, as well. Once your bag is full, simply unhook the top from the liner holder, pull it up until you see the serrated line on the bottom of the bag, and tear it free from the roll. From there, open the next bag and fit it over the liner holder, and you’re ready to get scooping again.

Stylish Design

The Litter Genie Platinum Pail is very similar to other Litter Genie options in terms of function. Where it differs is in style and materials.

The body of this pail is made with stainless steel, which gives it a sleek and shiny look and a nice bit of weight. It is more durable than Litter Genie’s plastic options and easier to keep clean.

The modern design of this pail extends beyond the metal body to the rounded lid, inset lever door, and minimalist color palette. It will effortlessly fade into the decor of any home.

Is The Litter Genie Platinum Pail a Good Value?

Litter Genie has more or less cornered the market on effective odor-controlling litter pails, but compared to the few worthy competitors they have, the Platinum Pail is fairly well priced. It costs a bit more than their standard models but less than other stainless steel options.

How We Tested

I tested the Litter Genie Platinum Pail over the course of a week by using it exclusively for my cat’s litter box cleaning.

Each evening, I scooped Makoa’s litter box and put the waste in the bin. I kept notes on odors, ease of use, difficulties, and anything else I believed other consumers would be interested in learning. I tracked how long it took to fill the bag and made notes about the refill process.

Lastly, I researched Litter Genie and their competitors, including their offerings, reviews, and pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much waste can the Litter Genie Platinum Pail hold?

According to the marketing information, this pail can hold 8 days’ worth of waste from one cat. I found this number to be fairly accurate for my 12-pound Domestic Shorthair.

Can I use any trash bags in this pail?

While any small trash bag would fit in this pail, the Litter Genie Easy Roll Refill is specially designed to fit securely over the liner holder and to make refilling the pail quick and simple.

Can I use the Platinum Pail in a multi-cat household?

Yes, you can. However, the smaller capacity of this pail will require more frequent emptying. Instead, you might consider the Litter Genie XL Pail, which is designed for use with multiple cats.
