Coat Length: Longhair
Physical Characteristics: Large ears with prominent tift, long plumed tail
Personality Traits: Gentle, intelligent, loyal

Maine Coons are easily recognizable due to their size, ranking as one of the largest domestic cat breeds out there. This “King of Cats” is larger than most small dogs. Their intelligence makes them an involved companion. However, be prepared to give your Maine Coon lots of attention as they are very close to their owners.

3. Persian

Personality Traits: Quiet, sweet, easygoing

The Persian cat has been on the CFA’s list of popular cat breeds for years, and it is easy to see why. Their sweet and gentle nature makes them great companions for more laidback people. If you want to own one of these beautiful cats, ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder who has done genetic testing on the parents to ensure their offspring will not have polycystic kidney disease or breathing issues.

4. Exotic

Physical Characteristics: Broad face, short nose, muscular bodies
Personality Traits: Easygoing, gentle, quiet

The Exotic cat comes in longhair and shorthair types; however, they are wonderful pets no matter which coat length you fall in love with. They are quite similar in personality to the Persians, making them great for people living in apartments. The Exotic Shorthair lacks the long coat of a Persian, naturally, but this does not mean their coat is any less fluffy!

Coat Length: Shorthair
Physical Characteristics: Curly coat, large ears
Personality Traits: Loving, charming, silly

The Devon Rex is the embodiment of an elfin-like animal with their large, inquisitive eyes and alert ears. They are also one of the few cat breeds with curly or wavy fur, making them truly unique in the cat world. Their endearing appearance matches their playful personality perfectly. Devon Rexes cannot tolerate being left alone for a long period of time. These cats do best with people who are frequently at home.

British Shorthairs often resemble teddy bears because of their round faces and stocky bodies. Their teddy bear appearance also extends to their personality. They are affectionate, gentle, and mellow. The British Shorthairs have stocky bodies and stout legs. Their body size does reduce their agility a bit, but this does not mean they don’t like to play and have fun with their owner!

Physical Characteristics: Slender, commonly ruddy colored
Personality Traits: Active, affectionate, curious

Many people have been intrigued by the Abyssinian because of its affectionate and curious nature. Physical Characteristics: Ears fold forward and down, various colors and patterns
Personality Traits: Calm, friendly, homebodies

The Scottish Fold is another easily recognized cat with their distinctive folded ears. They are calm and lovable. Plus, they don’t mind being a low-key housecat. However, due to the genetic health issues surrounding the Scottish Fold, reputable and recognized breeders will only breed fold-eared cats to straight-eared cats. This helps lessen the chance of the kittens having painful health issues.

Physical Characteristics: Stocky, round face, various colors
Personality Traits: Self-sufficient, easygoing, trainable

While they are fairly self-sufficient, they want to keep their eyes on you and what you do around the house. Despite them watching over you, they are not very vocal. They often emit a silent meow if they want something from you.
