Does Figo Pet Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions? Facts & FAQ

german shorthaired pointer dog check by vet

Figo pet insurance policies are designed to cover your pet for unforeseen accidents and illnesses that occur after the policy is purchased. Unfortunately, Figo pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. Most pet insurance companies also have this exclusion in their policies to deter people from only purchasing insurance after their pet becomes sick or injured.

What Qualifies as A Pre-Existing Condition for Figo Pet Insurance?

Figo defines pre-existing conditions as injuries or illnesses with symptoms that your dog or cat already has prior to signing up for a policy with Figo.

The keyword here is “symptoms.” For Figo, it doesn’t matter if your pet’s illness was ever officially diagnosed or treated by a veterinarian. If your pet was displaying symptoms before you purchased a policy with Figo, they’re not covering it.

On a positive note, Figo does make an exception for certain cases. For instance, if your pet’s condition is curable and there have been no symptoms for at least 12 months, you may be eligible for coverage.

Pre-Existing Conditions & Figo’s Waiting Period

Aside from symptoms that show up before you buy Figo pet insurance, there’s another big factor that determines whether or not your pre-existing condition will be covered: Figo’s waiting period.

The waiting period is the amount of time you have to wait after buying a policy before your pet’s insurance coverage kicks in. For Figo, it’s generally one day for accidents and 14 days for illnesses. For particular conditions, such as orthopedic issues, the company has a 6-month waiting period in place.

During that time, if your dog shows any symptoms of a pre-existing condition, their insurance policy will not cover it—even if you didn’t know your pet had the condition when you first signed up for coverage.

How Does Figo Determine Pre-Existing Conditions?

Figo is pretty thorough when it comes to investigating pre-existing conditions. They will likely request access to your pet’s medical records from every veterinarian visit dating back to when you adopted your pet or within the 12 months before the inception of your policy.

This is true even if you already have an existing policy and are trying to get your claim approved. Aside from complete vet records, Figo will also request your vet’s notes and the date of your pet’s birth or adoption.

Can You Still Get Figo Pet Insurance for a Dog With Pre-Existing Condition?

Just because your dog has a pre-existing condition doesn’t automatically exclude you from getting your pet protected. You can still purchase health coverage from Figo, and the only difference is that your pet’s pre-existing condition and issues related to it won’t be covered.

If you’re not sure whether or not your pet’s condition would be considered pre-existing, it’s always best to contact Figo directly and ask.

Final Thoughts

Discovering that your pet’s condition may not be covered by insurance can be disheartening. However, it is still important to have some form of pet insurance for your furry friend in case of accidents or illnesses that pop up down the road.

It’s also best to have your pet insured as early as possible when they’re still young and healthy. By doing so, you can avoid any potential issues with pre-existing conditions and get the coverage you and your pet deserves.
